Fixed and Modular Switches
Fixed Configuration switches are equipped with a fixed number of ports and are typically not expandable. On the other hand, Modular Configuration switches allow you to add expansion modules as needed, thereby delivering the best flexibility to address changing networks demands. Examples of expansion modules are application-specific (such as Firewall, Wireless, or Network Analysis), modules for additional interfaces, power supplies, or cooling fans.
Branch, Edge and Aggregation Routers
Branch routers are used to connect and aggregate all the enterprise branches into the WAN Aggregation core router to extend HQ services to remote users. Edge routers are specialized routers located at a network boundary that enables a campus network to connect to external networks. They are primarily used at two demarcation points: the wide area network (WAN) and the Internet. Edge routers are often hardware devices, but their functions can also be performed by software running on a standard computing node.
Data Center Interconnect (DCI)
Data center interconnect (DCI) is yet another routing and switching function where we try to connect two data centers together via Layer 2 or 3 links. Layer 2 extensions are much more common because of their capability to take all Ethernet frames as is across the data centers. Major drivers behind DCI are as follows:
- Data center consolidation and virtualization.
- Disaster recovery or data center High Availability.
- Geo-clustering, where clusters are connected across geographies.
- Gradual migration to a new premises.
Industrial Networking
Industrial networking devices are designed for harsh environments. They are built to withstand extreme environmental conditions while adhering to overall IT network design, compliance, and performance requirements. Industrial networking devices are used to oversee a variety of Internet of Things (IoT) tasks, such as:
